We’re delighted to feature Amato Gelato, one of Vancouver’s most beloved gelato shops, founded by Mario LoScerbo. From a humble beginning, Mario and his team have transformed a simple concept of gelato into a thriving empire.
Mario’s story begins in 1929 with his grandfather, who started the gelato business over 100 years ago. Reflecting on his early days, Mario recalls:
"When I was a kid, I remember that we were making the gelato in the hard way with ice and salt and cranking by hand. It was hard work, so I didn’t like it." - Mario
Despite the challenges, Mario pursued culinary expertise, which eventually led him to Canada, where he combined his culinary skills with his passion for gelato.
His gelato became the highlight of his restaurant, prompting customers to take it home, which in turn inspired Mario to open his first gelato shop at Granville Island Market nearly 50 years ago. Since then, Amato Gelato has continued to grow, moving locations four times and continuously expanding its product line to over a thousand unique flavours.
"We were the first ones to create many, many original flavours like green tea and coffee. Years ago, cappuccino and espresso were unheard of in gelato," Mario shared.
Mario’s daughter, Elizabeth, grew up immersed in the family business.
"I was born into the family business. I grew up eating gelato, making it, scooping it, serving it, and talking about it," Elizabeth says.
Alongside Elizabeth, Beata, who handles marketing for Amato Gelato, plays a vital role in ensuring the brand's continuous growth and adaptation to modern marketing strategies.
As the business grew, so did the need for effective marketing strategies too. DYNE stepped in to help. "Somebody approached me from DYNE, and I didn’t know what it was. But I always like to listen when people try to sell something or try to share new ideas because you learn from that," Mario recalls. For context, the average CPA for restaurant ads is typically $0.68 to $3.40 CAD on Meta and $1.35 to $4.05 CAD on Google.
These cost-efficient ads have successfully translated into actual customers, driving increased foot traffic to their café and contributing to their overall growth.
Mario adds that DYNE has not only helped improve traffic but has also saved him time and worry. "It has saved me a lot of time and worry about how we can build our brand better. Now, Beata doesn’t ask me any questions anymore. She goes straight to DYNE, which has freed me to focus on other aspects of the business."
